A Mighty Fortress Is Our Dog

How Great Thou Art

Squirrels run the fence, scour the yard,
take to the trees when you slip outside
to endure yet another harangue
from the tangle of overhead wires,
picking up right where you left off
this morning, righteous of heart,
tail a sword, certainty your shield,
God’s own agent framed in this window
scattering my gnawing doubts,
chattering, to the highest branches.

Felt Board

In Sunday school we strained

     to hear sandals scraping stone
the snap and crackle of kindling

     echo of gospel songs sung
                             in three part harmony

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego

     overlays free floating
                    smiles all around, fronting

    a fiery furnace more
                    beehive than crematorium

Nebuchadnezzar scowling

from the soft verge of his velvet palace
                  hush of orange aloe leaves

     licking the plush pink
feet of an angel hovering over

the muffled din of a passing July morning.

Bible story....

Felt Board

In Sunday school we strained

     to hear sandals scraping stone
the snap and crackle of kindling

     echo of gospel songs sung
                             in three part harmony

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego

    a fiery furnace more
                    beehive than crematorium

Nebuchadnezzar scowling

from the soft verge of his velvet palace
                  hush of orange aloe leaves

     licking the bare pink
feet of an angel hovering over

the muffled bliss of a July morning.
