Puppy Orientation

There Will Be Stairs

A leash, a bowl, at least one walk a day
two squares and all the flotsam and jetsam
you can cadge short of larceny from the
plate.  The park is close, an open maw that

must be appeased, sere indifferent god with
this strange affinity for tennis balls
offered up in prayerful overhand arcs.
Let’s hope you’re no fetching unbeliever,

the rational type thwarting every gift
sent aloft, dropping Nietzsche and endless
filthy Spauldings at my feet.  You can count
on rides in the car and walks in the woods

year round, red bandana in winter, a
dash of color on the canvas of a
painting we’ll never finish, returning
again and again to a stark landscape

vibrating with ranks of vertical tines
issuing from ribbons of blue shadow
unfurled toward dusk, a field of white festooned
with your bold smudges of heedless yellow.

There will be stairs to lever and convey
us up and down, in and out, a benign
case that will metastasize as we age
along parallel tracks, dwarfing us one

unexpected evening in spring, coffee
programmed, door closed on one final circuit
of the backyard, a series of slow drips
and drabs to remind you why you went out

in the first place, a familiar artless
dance among dogs and men of a certain
mien.  We’ll stand wordless, moon waning through
an upper pane, day spent, our long shared trail

behind us, a moment’s hesitation
at the bottom of the looming well then
up to bed where I’ll lay awake until
the sound of your breathing falls in step with

the warm night breeze that rustles the curtains
and seeds our dreams, here to beckon us out
for a walk off the leash through woods stirring
green, last cones of snow bidding us farewell.

good advice

Secret Of Walking Dogless

Go east on Sixth.  Keep the clip brisk, a trick
dear to dogless walkers; hands that long for
Snapping twanging leashes bereft, empty,
Retreat to deep jacket pockets searching

for the missing Milkbone, clenching themselves
into dormant balls.  Fetch! Retrieve them, set
them swinging in brash arcs, fingers popping
keeping time to something upbeat, punchy

lodged in your head.  North now on Wilson Street
through old growth neighborhoods sprouting new buds
Here and there; tear downs hauled away, fresh sod
unrolled, wending your way at last to the

gates of Oak View where you can drop the act
at last and stroll among the squat graven
slabs away from prying eyes, safe among
friends, hand extended in exult charade.

Rose

Rose

I never saw things from your
point view.  You never said as much but I could see
it in your eyes.  That and the maddening prescience you tried

to hide, distracting me with
feigned puzzlement, a neat sleight of hand
turned with an economical tilt of the head, a prick of the ears,

a trick I’ve been working on when I’m all
alone.  You’d laugh, a fly on the wall, to see me
descend the stairs on all fours to growl at the mailman.

A complicated piece of choreography, one
you always managed with aplomb and a ferocious
sense of dignity woefully missing from my performance.

I’m afraid I haven’t yet got the hang
of overturning the kitchen trash can and
scattering the contents throughout the house

and no amount of practice will improve
my hearing.  But if you happened to walk
in right now I’m sure you’d smile to see me asleep

on my back in a patch of warm
sunlight, legs going, dreaming of fields
of rabbits and elusive tennis balls and your undying love.

poem

Corner Bookstore

Is it the sound of my exhaled breath releasing
me from my leather chair, dry thumb
plinking tines on a plastic comb or
the pattern of steps I take looking for
my shoes, dance of a drone

bee giving up coordinates to apple blossoms,
that alerts the dog to a walk before
I can lift the chain from the nail, dead
giveaway sound of beads poured
into a metal bowl calling you

into the kitchen, drawing you outside
behind me, collar turned up against
light rain, jacket flapping open to thin
wind rushing April along when she would
rather wait for us by the side

door, a quick break from the march to
May. Outbound leg a true course
down the south side of the street past the
gravity of the park tugging the dog to fetch
ball free of the leash. Chance for honest

work, to hone her craft, lost now to the
uncertainties of left or right, stop or go,
here or there, fast or slow and silence in the
vacuum between us. Ears pricked to scratchy
short-wave maydays only she can hear

spiraling overhead, gift and burden of
a beast who can sense impending
earthquake while the rest of us laugh and head
for the second floor. Past the old fire alarm
relay station, slate and stone and

wavy glass anchored, enduring
time passing over, a torrent of spring melt
boiling against scoured banks, leaving behind
sluggish pools, echoes of fast, rising water
carrying some, drowning others.

Up the easy slope into town the way hurtling
bowling balls return, slow, emerging
from darkness with a muffled knock against
Main Streets’ acceleration, looped and seamless.
We hedge against the prevailing

pace with the rhythm of Budwigs’
brushes under Guarldi’s piano.
The bookstore floats above Sixth and
Main, stern of a Cunard liner at midnight
anchor, plate riveted to rib, bleeding

light, ready to sail. We stand dwarfed on
the dock, faces lit winter moons,
wondering whether to wave bon voyage
or board to lean on the rail, fingers
spliced, uncertain seas ahead.
