another one about autumn

Stem

Let them flare against blue saucer skies
School on biting wind, rattle bones to ward
Off waves that claw the breadth of reach

West of Spray Falls, drunk on summer liquor
Flush and masked for a night to remember
Letting go beyond them, my final act a mercy.

another moon poem

One Night, Late Summer

The Harvest Moon presides
But won’t presume
A promise to itself
Despite imploring wood smoke
In spite of homing embers
That rise to swarm
A Janus face
Waxing luminous as royal jelly
A weather eye on the waning
Bound to come
Willing for the moment
To look the other way
While I haul on this lasso
Your upturned eyes enameled
In buttery gleam.

More about squirrels

Costco Reading Glasses

Thanks for returning
My tortoise shell
Reading glasses
To the patio table
Where I left them
Last Sunday
Only to rediscover
Them this morning
Patterned
Over in houndstooth
Smudges
Ear pieces
Pocked with
Tooth marks
Upwards
Of a thousand
The larger ones
To be fair
Inflicted
Before your time
Otherwise
Good as new no
Harm no foul no
Questions asked
Except
(this, only to satisfy a curiosity)
Why
Corrective lenses
Of all things
What
With
God given
Crackerjack
Visual acuity
Not to mention
Lack of discernable bridge.
The Shiny Object Theory
Holds no water when
You factor
In the diamond
Pinkie ring
Left untouched
Near an unmolested
Waterford salver
Heaped with baubles.
Ruling out
Incipient kleptomania
Vanity then
An accessory
To balance
Bushy
Extravagance
Perhaps
A glimpse
In the side view
Of my car
Planting seeds
Of doubt
Rectangular frames
Jarring
On the plush almond
Of your face
Less than
The desired cowboy
Essence of Governor
Rick Perry
More like
Some twitchy rodent
Peering out
Over a pair
Of Costco
Reading glasses
On a summer’s worth
Of winter stores.
