Liberty Ship

The boat bound for Luzon
That bore you into tomorrow
Somewhere east of the Marshall Islands
Was a rust bucket out of San Francisco
Riding high at anchor
When a blacked out train
Pulled out of Macon
On schedule to ferry you
Over the Colorado
West of Durango
In two days time.
A Liberty Ship
Maybe she ended up
In the green ’52 Buick
That spirited you across
Oklahoma and Texas griddle
Or one of thirty
Years of rigs
That stole you away to hump
Chryslers to Akron and Scranton and Wheeling.
My desire for narrative symmetry
Locates some reconstituted
Element of the old tub
In the power boats you gunned
Across Anchor Bay
The tandem Cummings diesel
That pulled the R.V.
Down to Kissimmee.
The Liberty Ship
Delivering on a promise
Time and time again
Unsung trace alloy, perhaps
In the last rung of the ladder
That conveyed you up
To the terminal beat of your heart.

As If We Needed Another Autumn To

pull the plug

on summer

set the stage

for winter

strand seven apples

in a green glass

bowl on

a kitchen table

goad us

outdoors to

stand in

 thrall to

sky blue yarn

unspooled to dusk

flinch at a flurry

of red and yellow hands that

clamor to

push us

to our knees

hold us down

weight our lids

with copper while we

count backward

lulled by wood

smoke, fleeting color

we need

like a goddamn hole

in the head

like someone

to

come along to

kick leaves

search for words

another poem

the last thing

we need night to

erase our outlines

free us

to

lean on rakes

inhale smoke

from a thousand

burning stanzas.

Thank you . . .

Gratitude

I’m proud you never killed
anyone driving drunk as a lord
in my car on school nights
late on weekends after tossing
your filthy apron and clocking
out ripe and sloppy on wedding
screwdrivers gulped on the sly
engulfed in great gouts of steam
issued forth from the big Hobart
a purification ritual that rendered
you invisible until I could melt
away into the sober night
make good my escape yet again.
