Squirreled away

Patio Lights

Cygnus, Ursa’s Major and Minor
Cassiopeia and the Big Dipper
Burn cool in the heavens tilting above
This darkened patio thanks to you, so
Furtive, so clever, so industrious
All those buried backyard cache’s studding
A three dimensional mental map, your
Expression impassive, wall eyed, tail like
Smoke from a cigarette burning in an
Ashtray, buffeted plume I would proudly
Display from a whipping aerial back
When cars still had them.  Inefficient use
Of energy in the form of precious
Calories burned and for what exactly
If not to cast me into eternal
Darkness with your rabidly yellowed teeth
Retreating to some high leafy redoubt
Dreaming acorns while ice melts in a glass
On a table next to this chair where I
Sit gazing heavenward connecting feint
Pin pricks into rampaging rodent shapes.

for WAHD

Birthday Poem

Birthdays are like playground merry-go-rounds
the kind with diamond plate decking sprouting
galvanized octopi spokes to entangle
arms and legs, relentless in their desire
to send you to the emergency room
broken and bloodied, a dark fear I was
helpless not to entertain when I should
have been committing every downy hair
on the curve of your cheek to memory
as you came round again and again and again
commanding me to make it go faster
while I silently willed the blur slow, slower.

Repost

Six Days On The Road

Dave Dudley dogged it but you never
let your log book get behind

and if it was blame it on a lousy
West Virginia three-way split

over mountain roads glazed with fear
gears grabbing the grades

by the collar to choke and throttle
steel teeth meshing, nerves frayed.

The load, Detroit V-Eight muscle, wheels
for everyone, two to a garage

seven on the trailer, swaying
on the curves,  cinched down

by chains torqued tight, wind
keening through the links,

black smoke settling into hollar’s
like dark oaths sworn soft

in murmured prayer, gods
petitioned for the slow

exquisitely painful
death of Bob Patterson

wretched dispatcher
neck tied bane of your existence.

Six days on the road, years
swallowed whole in the side views.
